All Progressives Congress (APC) flags were hoisted at the Kano State Government House on Monday, marking the formal return of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the ruling party.
The governor’s move comes days after he resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), ending months of political speculation over his alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. Yusuf, who played a key role in NNPP’s 2023 electoral success in Kano, cited the realities of governance and the need for closer collaboration with the Federal Government as reasons for his defection.
Governor Yusuf is set to officially register as an APC member on Monday, alongside lawmakers and local government chairmen. The registration will include 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
Preparations are ongoing for his reception by APC leaders, with the party’s national leader, Abdullahi Ganduje, expected to return from London to personally welcome him in Kano.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, explained that Yusuf’s decision was motivated by considerations of governance, national cohesion, and development. Yusuf is also expected to officially launch the APC electronic registration exercise in Kano on the same day.
Governor Yusuf previously belonged to the APC between 2014 and 2018 before joining other political platforms. His return to the party is seen as a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
