Mustapha Kwankwaso, son of former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and from the Kano State Executive Council.
His resignation comes just days after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally announced his exit from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a political development that has continued to trigger realignments within the state’s political structure.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mustapha Kwankwaso described his decision as one taken “with a heavy heart,” expressing appreciation to Governor Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano State.
He said his time in office provided valuable experiences and lessons, adding that he was grateful for the trust placed in him by the governor and the state government.
“As I step aside, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve. I also hope that our sports development programmes and initiatives will grow stronger and flourish in the years ahead,” he said.
Mustapha, however, did not disclose specific reasons for his resignation.
His exit follows the earlier resignation of Yusuf Kofarmata, the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, who stepped down from his position citing concerns about the direction of the state government.
Kofarmata had said he could no longer serve under a government that, in his words, had “derailed from the ideology that brought it to power.”
The resignations come amid growing political shifts in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s defection, with multiple senior government officials reportedly reviewing their positions within the administration.
