The federal government has officially assumed ownership and management of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, formerly owned by the Ogun State Government.
The takeover was formalised during the university’s 17th convocation ceremony, where a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, and the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad.
Speaking at the event, Ahmad described the handover as a historic milestone for the institution and a reflection of the federal government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education sector. She said the transition aligns with the government’s belief that national development depends largely on the quality of teachers.
According to the minister, the decision to adopt the university in March 2025 was deliberate, strategic, and guided by national interest. She praised the Ogun State Government for its responsible management of the institution and noted that the signing of the MoU officially integrates TASFUED into the federal university system.
Ahmad also acknowledged the role played by patriotic Nigerians, including Governor Abiodun, in advocating for the takeover.
In his remarks, Abiodun said the adoption promotes national equity, as Ogun East Senatorial District can now boast of a federal university. He thanked President Bola Tinubu for approving the takeover, describing it as evidence of the administration’s focus on human capital development.
Earlier, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Adekunle Adeogun, highlighted student accommodation as a major challenge facing the university. He appealed to stakeholders for support in providing adequate housing and expanding lecture facilities to meet the demands of its new federal status.
