The Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has pledged support to enhance security and infrastructure development in Ondo State, as the southwestern state marked its Golden Jubilee on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in Akure. The commitment was delivered as part of his address to dignitaries, traditional rulers, clergy and other stakeholders gathered at the Akure Township Stadium for the 50th anniversary celebration.
In a speech read and delivered on his behalf by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, President Tinubu emphasised that his administration remains firmly committed to collaborating with Ondo State to harness its “human and natural resources for sustainable development.” He reaffirmed his pledge to govern “fairly, equitably and inclusively, regardless of religion, political affiliation or social background.”
“Fifty years ago, Ondo State was created to empower its people, harness local talent and bring governance closer to communities,” the President said. Adding that, “Today, we celebrate a state that has distinguished itself in education, public service, culture and economic contribution. The people of this state have consistently demonstrated diligence, innovation and unity. You have produced leaders, educators, professionals and citizens whose contributions have shaped Nigeria’s growth and stability.”
Tinubu described the Golden Jubilee as not just a commemoration of past achievements but also a “vision for the future,” highlighting the state’s fertile agricultural land, extensive coastline, mineral wealth and vibrant youth population as key assets that can drive socioeconomic transformation. He identified sectors such as agriculture, education, technology, tourism and the blue economy as areas where Ondo could accelerate growth and prosperity with the right support.
“As part of the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Government remains committed to supporting Ondo State in harnessing these opportunities, improving infrastructure, strengthening security and empowering communities, ensuring that every citizen benefits from growth and development,” Tinubu said, underlining his administration’s resolve to work with the state government on critical development objectives.
The President also called on the people of the state to embrace unity and collective effort in building a future that positions Ondo as a model of national progress. “I call on you to work together to make Ondo State a centre of innovation and education, a hub of agricultural and technological excellence, and a place where every citizen can achieve their full potential,” he urged.
In his own remarks at the event, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa congratulated the people of Ondo State on reaching the half-century mark. He urged residents to remain united in tackling both present and future challenges as the state charts its next 50 years.
“As we celebrate our past with pride, we must also confront our present with honesty and courage,” Aiyedatiwa said, stressing that the milestone compels deep reflection on the kind of state Ondo must deliberately build for future generations. “Governance, in our understanding, must translate into improved lives, expanded opportunities and restored confidence in public institutions,” he added.
The ceremony drew a wide array of notable figures, including Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, former Ondo Governor Dr Olusegun Mimiko, the Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande, and several other leaders and stakeholders, underscoring the national significance of the anniversary event.
President Tinubu’s call for strengthened security and infrastructure support comes amid broader federal efforts to bolster state capacities, with the Federal Government having recently disbursed substantial funds to states and the Federal Capital Territory for security and developmental projects, a programme linked to the 2025 Budget of Restoration that prioritises peace and prosperity across Nigeria.
