Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has launched a strong public attack on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as unfit to remain in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and distancing himself from the minister’s political influence within the opposition party.
Makinde made the remarks in Ibadan during the commissioning of the newly completed PDP Secretariat in Oke-Ado, where he openly criticised what he described as disruptive elements within the party. He expressed regret over his past political alignment with Wike, particularly during the build-up to the 2023 general elections, saying he had since reconsidered his stance and resolved not to repeat such alliances.
According to the governor, some individuals within the PDP had used the party’s internal structures to pursue interests that did not align with the party’s objectives. He accused these figures of undermining party unity and weakening its electoral prospects, stressing that the PDP must rid itself of such influences to rebuild credibility.
Makinde stated that although the party had tolerated internal divisions in the past, recent actions showed the need for firm decisions to protect its future. He referenced internal party developments in late 2025 that led to the removal of some leaders from influential positions, describing the move as necessary to restore order and discipline.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to reforming the PDP and urged members to focus on unity, accountability and loyalty to the party’s ideals. He also expressed confidence in the judiciary to fairly resolve ongoing legal disputes arising from the party’s internal conflicts.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a key figure in the PDP crisis that followed the 2023 elections, has previously defended his political choices, insisting they were based on personal convictions rather than betrayal of the party. His actions during the election period, including his opposition to the PDP presidential ticket, remain a major source of controversy within the party.
Political observers say the latest clash highlights the PDP’s lingering internal struggles as it attempts to reposition itself after years out of power at the federal level. Analysts warn that continued factional disputes could further weaken the party’s ability to present itself as a viable alternative ahead of future elections.
The confrontation between Makinde and Wike is expected to intensify debates over leadership, loyalty and reform within Nigeria’s main opposition party in the coming months.
