The National Councillors Forum of Nigeria (NCFN) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general election, citing the positive impact of his administration’s policies at the grassroots level.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, the president of the forum, Evoh Nwikegwu, described the restoration of local government autonomy as a historic milestone that has significantly improved governance, accountability, and development in rural communities.
Nwikegwu noted that the NCFN represents 8,809 councillors across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, covering over 176,000 polling units nationwide. According to him, councillors have witnessed firsthand the effects of the president’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, particularly at the community level where government policies directly affect citizens.
He described local government autonomy as the administration’s “crowning achievement,” stressing that it has enhanced funding mechanisms, strengthened accountability, and accelerated development at the grassroots. He added that reforms in agriculture and investments in rural infrastructure have laid a strong foundation for national growth.
The NCFN president also commended President Tinubu for strengthening national security through the modernization of the armed forces and improved coordination among intelligence agencies.
Calling on ward leaders and grassroots coordinators, Nwikegwu urged them to take the message of the administration’s achievements to households across the country. He maintained that the president has demonstrated the courage and competence required to earn a second term to consolidate ongoing reforms.
Other speakers at the event included Hyacinth Turnoe, councillor representing Enenaezeraku Ward in Ohaozora Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, and Okorie Raphael, national coordinator of the Citizens Network for Peace and Development. Raphael appealed to Nigerians to give the National Assembly the opportunity to implement the amended Electoral Act.
