Tesla chief executive officer Elon Musk has triggered widespread discussion on wealth and happiness after stating that money does not necessarily guarantee personal fulfilment.
Musk made the remark on Thursday via X, formerly known as Twitter, writing that the popular saying about money not buying happiness holds true. The post quickly gained global attention, recording over 52 million views, tens of thousands of reposts and hundreds of thousands of likes within hours.
Reactions to the statement were mixed. While some users agreed with the billionaire, arguing that wealth does not protect people from emotional struggles or personal challenges, others countered that financial stability improves quality of life, reduces stress and creates access to opportunities.
The debate also gained traction in Nigeria, where social media users linked Musk’s comment to Afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold’s 2021 song It Is What It Is, which expresses a similar reflection on money and happiness.
Musk did not elaborate further on his statement. However, he has previously spoken about the pressures that come with immense wealth and leadership responsibilities.
The billionaire remains a prominent figure in global discourse due to his influence in technology, business and politics, as well as ongoing scrutiny of his companies, including Tesla, SpaceX and X. His net worth has seen significant fluctuations in recent years, largely tied to changes in Tesla’s share price.
In December 2025, Musk became the first person to reach a net worth of $638 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which reported a 42.7 per cent increase in his wealth over the previous year. He has also continued to expand his presence in the technology sector, recently announcing the launch of Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia developed by his artificial intelligence company, xAI.
