Residents of Plateau State were left stunned on Wednesday morning after a rare 22-degree sun halo appeared in the sky, an optical phenomenon many described as the first of its kind witnessed in the state.
The sun halo, seen as a bright circular ring surrounding the sun, occurs when sunlight passes through ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. These hexagon-shaped ice crystals refract light like prisms, creating the striking visual effect.
Experts explain that the halo usually appears white but may sometimes show a reddish inner edge and a bluish outer rim. Although it does not guarantee rainfall, its presence often suggests an approaching moisture-laden weather system that could bring rain within 24 to 48 hours.
Scientists also note that, in folklore, the 22-degree halo has long been associated with signs of impending rain or snow. However, they caution members of the public against staring directly at the sun during such occurrences, as it can damage the eyes.
The rare sight sparked a mix of fear, curiosity, and excitement among residents of Jos and surrounding areas, with many describing the event as historic and unforgettable for Plateau State.
