Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio, accusing him of being responsible for the controversy surrounding the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, El-Rufai argued that the issue should not be attributed to the Senate as an institution but to Akpabio’s leadership of the upper chamber.
According to him, Akpabio is allegedly acting in the interest of powerful political forces, claiming that the Senate President is working in alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the matter.
El-Rufai called on senators who oppose the proposed amendment to unite and openly resist it when the National Assembly resumes plenary sessions.
He also questioned the use of formal honorifics associated with members of the Senate, stating that his long-standing personal history with Akpabio informs his views on the Senate President’s conduct.
The proposed amendment to the Electoral Act has continued to generate heated reactions among political stakeholders, with concerns raised about its implications for Nigeria’s electoral process.
