A Nigerian national, Emeka Uzor, has been shot dead at a filling station in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) said Uzor was killed at about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at a Caltex filling station in Windsor East, Randburg.
In a statement issued on Monday, NUSA President, Mr Smart Nwobi, and the union’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Akindele Olunloyo, said the deceased was attacked while seated inside his vehicle.
They disclosed that Uzor hailed from Nkerefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
NUSA described the killing as part of a growing pattern of violence against Nigerian nationals in South Africa and called for urgent action by South African authorities.
The union urged the South African Minister of Police and the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
It also appealed to the Nigerian government, through the offices of the Consul General and the High Commissioner, to engage diplomatically with South African authorities over the incident.
While expressing confidence in South Africa’s justice system, NUSA said it hoped the perpetrators would be identified and prosecuted to provide closure for the victim’s family.
The union further called on the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to collaborate with NUSA in addressing security concerns affecting Nigerians through diplomatic and legal channels.
NUSA urged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, assuring them that it is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure justice is served.
