The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has cautioned cattle rearers against engaging in open grazing within Ibadanland, describing the practice as illegal and unacceptable.
The monarch issued the warning on Monday during a meeting with members of the Olubadan-in-Council and executives of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Ayoade, the Olubadan stressed that open cattle grazing is prohibited not only in Ibadanland but across Oyo State. He warned that violators would face arrest and prosecution in line with existing laws.
Oba Ladoja said the palace would no longer tolerate incidents in which herdsmen allegedly attack farmers, destroy farmlands, or threaten the safety of residents. He urged cattle owners to adopt lawful and peaceful practices, noting that the protection of lives and property remains a priority.
The traditional ruler also charged Mogajis, Baales, and other traditional leaders to remain vigilant in their communities and ensure adequate security, warning that negligence would attract sanctions from the palace.
He further advised residents to promptly report the presence of suspected criminals, including armed herdsmen and kidnappers, to security agencies.
Earlier, the chairman of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association, David Olatunji, raised concerns over repeated attacks on farmers in the area, alleging destruction of crops, sexual violence, and loss of lives. He lamented that despite multiple reports to security agencies, no arrests had been made.
Olatunji appealed to the Olubadan and the Oyo State Government to intervene and provide adequate protection for farmers against continued attacks.
Several high-ranking traditional chiefs were in attendance at the meeting.
