The Nigerian Senate has approved the electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) IReV portal, while permitting manual collation as a fallback when technology fails.
The decision followed a review of Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act (Repeal and Enactment) Amendment Bill 2026, after concerns were raised over potential disputes and operational challenges during elections.
Senator Tahir Monguno (Borno North) sponsored the motion, proposing that presiding officers transmit results electronically after completing, signing, and stamping Form EC8A. The amendment stops short of mandating real-time uploads, giving room for manual results to be used when electronic transmission is disrupted due to network issues.
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro supported the motion, noting that electoral laws must balance transparency with the country’s infrastructural realities. After brief deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the amendment to a voice vote, with the “ayes” prevailing.
