Renowned Literary Critic and Lion of African Letters, Biodun Jeyifo, Dies at 80

The President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, Professor Andrew Haruna, has confirmed the passing of world-renowned literary critic, Marxist scholar, and public intellectual, Professor Emeritus Biodun Jeyifo, which took place on Wednesday, February 11.

He reportedly succumbed to complications related to renal failure. His death follows closely after he celebrated his 80th birthday on January 5, an event highlighted by a major symposium in Lagos organized by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism.

Professor BJ, as he was affectionately known, enjoyed a distinguished career at the then University of Ife and later held dual appointments at Cornell and Harvard Universities. An international gathering was organized in his honor at the Muson Centre to commemorate his 80th birthday on January 5th.
