Popular Nigerian comedian, Aderombi Adedayo, widely known as DeeOne, has urged former Labour Party presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, to recalibrate his political strategy ahead of the 2027 general election, warning that symbolic gestures and emotional appeal would not be enough to win the presidency.
In a video shared via his Instagram platform, DeeOne maintained that Obi and his supporters must build a more formidable, better-funded and strategically organised campaign structure if they hope to compete effectively in the next electoral contest.
According to him, reliance on what he described as “sympathy votes” may have created momentum in the last election cycle but would not guarantee success in 2027.
“You cannot win a presidential election with sympathy votes; it will not work,” he said, stressing that national elections demand stronger political coordination and structure.
The comedian also referenced Obi’s widely publicised modest lifestyle and visits to local markets, suggesting that such approaches may no longer resonate with voters in a future contest.
He clarified that while there was nothing wrong with maintaining simplicity, electoral victory would require more than symbolic engagements.
DeeOne further cautioned against underestimating the political strength of President Bola Tinubu and his loyal support base, often referred to by admirers as the ‘City Boy Movement’.
Legal Observer reports that Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party and finished third in the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The outcome was challenged at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and later at the Supreme Court, both of which upheld the declared results.
Highlighting the scale of preparation required for presidential races, DeeOne cited former United States President Donald Trump as an example, noting reports that the American politician committed substantial personal resources to his campaigns.
“Presidential election is not a joke; you have to show workings,” he stated, while advocating transparency in political fundraising and expenditure.
As of the time of filing this report, Obi had yet to respond to the comedian’s remarks. Observers say although the 2027 elections are still some time away, conversations and strategic positioning within key political circles have already begun.
