In a press statement released by the Association for Good Governance Advocacy (AGGA), the Ondo State Chapter has raised serious concerns regarding the resurgence of political thuggery and violence in the region. The report, issued amidst growing insecurity, alleges that a top aide to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is involved in sponsoring hoodlums responsible for recent violent attacks.
The group, in a statement by its State Coordinator, Mrs. Folakemi Benson, described the current climate in Ondo as alarming and distressing. It emphasized its commitment to promoting peace and good governance while condemning the violent incidents that have recently marred the political landscape, particularly following the recent APC Ward Congress.
“We are particularly saddened by the reported violent attack on the Ondo State APC Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin. This is not only an assault on his person but also a direct threat to democratic processes and political civility in the state,” the statement said. The group also condemned the tragic killings of two individuals in Idanre and the attack on the residence of former Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Saka Yusuf.
The statement expressed regret over the troubling normalization of political violence in Ondo, a state previously known for its political maturity and relative peace. “It is painful to note that many residents had believed political thuggery had become a thing of the past,” AGGA stated.
The organization criticized the current administration for fostering a climate of violence, asserting, “Aiyedatiwa’s leadership style shows that political thuggery is being encouraged and tolerated under the present government.” They noted that during the 2024 APC governorship primary elections, several party leaders perceived as opponents faced brutal attacks.
AGGA has further claimed that some of the thugs terrorizing the state are allegedly being financed by a non-indigene top aide of the Governor. While AGGA supports inclusive governance, they firmly oppose any actions that involve financing violence against the indigenes of Ondo State.
“If truly such an individual believes he can destroy lives and property simply because he intends to leave the state after the tenure of his principal, then all well-meaning citizens must rise to speak out now,” urged AGGA.
The organization has called on security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), to investigate the incidents promptly and hold those responsible accountable, emphasizing that “no political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen.”
AGGA reaffirmed its commitment to peace, justice, and accountability, stating, “Ondo State belongs to all of us, and we will continue to stand firmly for good governance.”
