Lawyer calls for restraint as police intensify investigation into Mirabel’s rape allegation

Counsel to Mirabel, the TikTok user at the centre of a controversial sexual assault claim, has appealed to Nigerians to remain calm while security agencies conclude their investigation into the matter.

The lawyer, Taofeek Akinbo, made this known in posts shared on X on Friday, where he publicly affirmed that he is representing the content creator and urged the public to avoid speculation fueled by social media discussions.

He assured that the issue was being handled with seriousness and in line with established legal procedures.

According to him, the case is receiving careful attention and is being managed with professionalism and strict adherence to due process.

Akinbo specifically appealed for patience as the Nigeria Police Force, through its Gender and Rape Allied Matters Unit at the Zone 2 Area Command in Abeokuta, continues its probe.

He also commended the police for the manner in which the investigation has been conducted so far, adding that further information would be made public at the appropriate time after the inquiry is concluded.

The development follows heightened public interest in the allegation, which has sparked widespread reactions and debate across social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Police Command had earlier disclosed that Mirabel had been discharged from hospital care but remains with officers to aid ongoing investigations.

The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this during an interview with News Central Television, explaining that Mirabel voluntarily reported at the Ibafo Police Division.

She stated that during initial interactions, the TikToker was unable to provide a clear account of events, prompting officers to immediately take her to a state-owned hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

Babaseyi noted that the police acted promptly because of the seriousness of the allegations contained in the viral TikTok video and related posts circulating on X.

She added that the Divisional Police Officer ensured that Mirabel received urgent medical attention, including admission into the Intensive Care Unit.

The police spokesperson stressed that at no time was Mirabel placed under arrest, maintaining that her safety and wellbeing have remained paramount throughout the process.

According to her, the TikToker has since been discharged and is currently with the police as investigations continue to ascertain the authenticity of the claims.

The controversy began after Mirabel, known on TikTok as @mirab351, shared a video alleging that she was sexually assaulted in her apartment, triggering public outrage and calls for justice.

Although initial online reports suggested the incident occurred in Lagos State, preliminary findings later indicated that it happened in Ogijo, Ogun State, placing the matter within the jurisdiction of the Ogun State Police Command.

Amid varying accounts circulating online, the police reiterated that Mirabel reported the matter voluntarily and dismissed claims that she was arrested, affirming that inquiries are still ongoing.
