Christopher Maikalangu of the All Progressives Congress has been declared winner of the Abuja Municipal Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.
The returning officer for AMAC, Andrew Abue, announced that Maikalangu, who is seeking a renewed mandate as incumbent chairman, polled 40,295 votes out of 62,861 valid votes cast to emerge victorious.
According to the results released by the electoral umpire, the candidate of the African Democratic Congress finished second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party trailed with 3,398 votes.
Abue disclosed that 2,336 ballots were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 65,197. He added that although 837,338 voters were registered in AMAC, 65,676 were accredited to participate in the exercise.
“Having met the legal requirements and secured the highest number of valid votes, Maikalangu of the APC is hereby declared elected,” Abue stated.
Further details of the poll indicated that Dantani Zanda of the PDP recorded 3,398 votes; Iber Shimakaha of the Peoples Redemption Party garnered 90 votes; and Simon Obinna of the Social Democratic Party scored 2,185 votes.
Madaki Robert of the Young Progressives Party received 421 votes, while Swani Buba of the Zenith Labour Party polled 189 votes, alongside other candidates who contested the election.
In his reaction, the APC collation agent, Gambo Babale, commended the conduct of the poll, describing both the voting and collation processes as transparent.
He expressed satisfaction with the exercise across polling units, ward centres and the AMAC collation venue, noting that the PDP’s victory in two councillorship seats in Karu and Karishi reflected the fairness of the process.
Babale congratulated the chairman-elect and urged him to sustain efforts in delivering democratic dividends to residents, adding that the outcome was a positive signal for the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Also speaking, Abdullahi Ibrahim, ward collation agent of the YPP, praised the credibility of the collation process and extended congratulations to the winner.
Agents of the ADC, APC, APGA, YPP and NNPP were present at the collation centre and endorsed the result sheets.
