The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a suspended operative of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Julius Ekujumi, in connection with the recovery of about 90 kilogrammes of suspected illicit drugs allegedly traced to his shop in December 2025.
The agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, disclosed in a statement that Ekujumi was apprehended on Wednesday in Akure as part of ongoing investigations following an earlier operation.
According to Babafemi, NDLEA officers had, on December 10, 2025, raided Ekujumi’s residence in Akure, where they reportedly uncovered a liquid concoction comprising different banned substances, including cannabis sativa, popularly referred to as “monkey tail.”
The substance, stored in two paint buckets and a 25-litre jerry can, was said to weigh 84 kilogrammes.
He added that an additional four kilogrammes of cannabis sativa were recovered in a bag during the operation, which took place in the presence of Ekujumi’s wife, Modupe, as he was not at home at the time.
The agency stated that Modupe allegedly admitted ownership of the exhibits and reportedly told investigators that her husband had encouraged her to venture into the sale of the mixture.
She has since been arraigned in court, while the NDLEA indicated that the charge would be revised to include Ekujumi following his arrest.
Ekujumi was previously suspended alongside Abu Taiwo and Akinsipe Victor by the Ondo Amotekun corps after they agitated for improved welfare and the issuance of formal letters of appointment.
The trio were later declared wanted by the corps over alleged acts of misconduct and breach of its regulations.
Attempts to get the reaction of the State Commander of Amotekun, Adetunji Adeleye, were unsuccessful, as he neither answered calls nor responded to text messages sent to him by our correspondent as of press time.
Meanwhile, the suspended operatives had instituted a suit at the Ondo State High Court in Akure seeking the enforcement of their fundamental rights.
The case has reportedly been adjourned on several occasions.
Counsel to the officers, Tope Temokun, confirmed that Ekujumi was picked up by NDLEA operatives at about 5pm on Wednesday at his shop in Akure.
Temokun said his client was among those who championed calls for the formalisation of appointments within the corps, describing him as one of the most vocal figures in the agitation.
He further alleged that in the early hours of December 10, 2025, a joint team of Amotekun and NDLEA personnel stormed his client’s residence and took away his wife, whom he claimed had been held without lawful justification.
The lawyer maintained that if any lawful accusation existed against his client, he should be promptly arraigned before a competent court, stressing that arrest and intimidation could not substitute for due process.
Temokun demanded the immediate release of Modupe or her swift prosecution if there were legitimate charges, and called on the authorities to charge Ekujumi to court without delay, adding that his legal team would pursue all lawful measures to protect their clients’ constitutional rights.
