President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s resolve to establish state police formations across the country, assuring Nigerians that the initiative aimed at tackling insecurity remains on course.
The President gave the assurance on Monday during an interfaith Iftar held at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Abuja to mark the commencement of the 2026 Ramadan fasting period, with governors and top government officials in attendance.
Tinubu stated that the creation of state police would form a major pillar of efforts to strengthen internal security, stressing that his government would not abandon or delay the plan.
He also expressed optimism about the country’s economic outlook, saying Nigeria had begun to overcome earlier economic challenges and was gradually witnessing positive improvements.
The President used the occasion to appeal for calm in Kano State, urging Governor Abba Yusuf to handle the ongoing political situation in the state with moderation following recent political developments.
Tension has risen in Kano after Yusuf’s return to the All Progressives Congress and his separation from former ally and ex-governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, alongside his exit from the New Nigeria People’s Party.
While some lawmakers reportedly aligned with the governor’s new political direction, the Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, remained with the NNPP, a development that has triggered speculation about possible impeachment proceedings.
Tinubu advised political leaders to act with tolerance and understanding, urging stakeholders to prioritise peace and stability while managing disagreements within the political space.
He further encouraged members of the ruling APC to create room for younger party members, stressing the importance of inclusiveness and unity within the party structure.
The President also applauded Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, for organising Ramadan outreach programmes benefiting both Muslims and Christians, describing the gesture as a strong example of national cohesion.
According to Tinubu, feedback reaching the presidency from across states included both commendations and concerns, but he maintained that collaboration among leaders remained vital to achieving national development.
He urged governors to deepen development at the grassroots level by extending opportunities and social interventions to local communities and vulnerable groups.
Speaking on the spiritual significance of Ramadan coinciding with the Christian Lenten season, Tinubu called on Nigerians to embrace sacrifice, discipline and unity, while promoting love and service to humanity.
Earlier, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, representing the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, commended the interfaith gathering, describing it as a reflection of national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Uzodimma said the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent offered a rare opportunity for Nigerians to strengthen harmony beyond religious and ethnic differences, while pledging continued cooperation between state governments and the Federal Government.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, ministers and several state governors were among dignitaries present at the event, which forms part of Tinubu’s annual Ramadan Iftar engagements.
