A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the recent attack on the convoy of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in Edo State was an assassination attempt allegedly carried out by government operatives or their agents.
Okonkwo made the claim on Tuesday while speaking during an interview on ARISE Television’s Prime Time, where he reacted to reports of gunmen attacking Obi’s convoy in the state.
According to him, the incident suggested a coordinated attempt on the life of the former Anambra State governor, insisting that the attack could not be dismissed as an ordinary security breach.
He stated that he had been in contact with former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, who allegedly provided details surrounding the incident and expressed concerns about the circumstances of the attack.
Okonkwo further alleged that the development might be connected to an earlier warning reportedly issued by the incumbent Edo State governor, who had cautioned Obi against visiting the state without prior clearance, claiming that his security could not be guaranteed.
He added that the earlier statement had raised fears among opposition figures and observers, noting that such remarks were publicly discussed as potential threats to political opponents.
The ADC chieftain explained that the incident occurred as supporters gathered to receive former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata, when the group reportedly encountered a convoy of about 10 vehicles led by a pilot car, leading to the chaotic situation that followed.
