Prominent opposition leaders on Thursday urged the National Assembly to initiate a fresh amendment of the Electoral Act, insisting that certain provisions in the existing law require urgent reconsideration.
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Abuja, the National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Ajuji Ahmed, who spoke on behalf of opposition parties, appealed to lawmakers to delete sections they described as controversial and inconsistent with democratic best practices.
The gathering attracted several influential political actors, including former Senate President David Mark; NNPP stalwart Buba Galadima; former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar; and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.
Also present at the Lagos/Osun Hall of Transcorp Hilton Abuja were the National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola; former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; and the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, alongside other stakeholders.
Among other notable attendees were Senator Dino Melaye, former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, and ex-Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke.
The opposition leaders stressed that reopening the amendment process would help improve the electoral framework, strengthen public confidence, and promote fairness in Nigeria’s democratic system ahead of forthcoming elections.
