At least 27 residents are feared to have been killed after suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters launched a deadly assault on a community in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The attackers reportedly descended on Shuwari Sholi village on motorcycles, unleashing gunfire on locals and torching homes and other property in an operation said to have lasted several hours.
Among the victims was the traditional head of the community, Bademi Papka, who was said to be related to the state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri.
A resident who requested anonymity said the gunmen targeted villagers gathered around the market square, shooting sporadically and causing widespread panic.
“They rode into the village and began firing at people sitting together near the market. Many ran towards the hills for safety. Some escaped, but others were not as lucky,” the source said.
The eyewitness added that although security personnel were alerted during the attack, they reportedly arrived after the assailants had fled the area.
While calm has gradually returned, residents are said to be gripped by fear and uncertainty, with calls for increased security presence to prevent further attacks.
A former chairman of Madagali Local Government Area, Maina Ularamu, confirmed that the incident occurred but noted that casualty figures remained unclear.
According to him, estimates of the death toll vary, with some sources putting the number at about 20 and others suggesting it could be higher.
He stated that a more accurate figure would likely emerge once the situation stabilises and a proper assessment is conducted.
