The Nigerian Senate Wednesday threw down the gauntlet at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), adopting a motion calling on President Bola Tinubu to immediately sack Registrar-General Husaini Magaji over his brazen disregard for legislative summons.
The dramatic showdown erupted during a Senate Committee on Finance session attended by members of the President’s economic team turning what should have been a routine briefing into a full-blown confrontation.
When Magaji’s name was announced, his seat was empty again. Lawmakers, visibly incensed, wasted no time venting their frustration at yet another no-show from the CAC helmsman who had been specifically scheduled to brief the committee on the commission’s operations.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu moved swiftly, sponsoring a motion demanding Magaji’s immediate removal.
“Since I came to the Senate, he has always given excuses that he is in the Villa,” Kalu thundered, accusing the Registrar-General of repeatedly treating the Finance Committee’s invitations with contempt.
Committee Chairman Senator Sani Musa piled on, raising the stakes further by flagging unresolved discrepancies in the reconciliation of the commission’s revenue matters Magaji had consistently dodged by refusing to appear before the panel.
Former Edo State Governor Senator Adams Oshiomhole went a step further, urging colleagues to hit the CAC where it hurts recommending an outright suspension of the commission’s 2026 budget consideration until the Registrar-General appears.
After deliberations, the Senate unanimously adopted the motion, formally urging the President to relieve Magaji of his duties.
The ball is now in Aso Rock’s court.
