A Federal High Court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organise elections in 11 Kogi State constituencies that have been left unrepresented for years.
Justice Isah Danshan said the decision was non-negotiable, pointing out that records show the constituencies existed at the state’s creation and deserve legislative representation.
“The evidence is clear. INEC must ensure elections are held in these suppressed constituencies in 2027,” the judge declared.
Barr. Ayo Kunle Jonathan, counsel for the petitioners, hailed the ruling and called on INEC to act immediately to allow residents their rightful representation.
The executive chairman of Kabba Bunu Local Government Area, who filed the case against INEC and the state government, welcomed the judgment, describing it as a correction of years of neglect.
He urged the electoral commission to promptly begin arrangements for the polls, stressing that the communities’ long-standing demand for fairness had been acknowledged.
Following the ruling, INEC is now expected to conduct elections for 36 constituencies in 2027, up from the previous 25, expanding legislative representation across Kogi State.
