Security agencies in Ekiti State have intensified operations across forest areas to dislodge suspected bandits believed to be relocating from neighbouring Kwara and Kogi states amid heightened security pressure.
The coordinated exercise, which began last week, is largely concentrated in parts of the state’s North Senatorial District following growing concerns over safety in the region.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Brig. Gen. Ebenezer Ogundana (retd.), said the operation involves a joint effort by both formal security agencies and community-based security groups.
He listed participating bodies to include the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps, Ekiti State Agro Marshal Corps, local vigilantes and hunters.
Ogundana explained that the deployment followed a recent security incident recorded about two weeks ago, prompting authorities to move swiftly to prevent criminal elements from establishing camps within the state’s forests.
He stated that the operation, backed by Governor Biodun Oyebanji, has forced suspected bandits out of several locations, while a number of arrests have been made with suspects undergoing screening by security operatives.
According to him, intelligence reports suggested the criminals viewed Ekiti forests as a potential hideout, adding that the ongoing operation would continue until all affected areas are cleared, especially after recent kidnapping cases reported in Erinmope community.
