Passengers aboard a Bus Rapid Transit bus on Tuesday narrowly avoided disaster after the vehicle erupted in flames while moving along the Mile 12 Bridge on Ikorodu Road in Lagos.
The frightening episode reportedly happened in the late morning, causing panic among commuters as smoke suddenly began pouring from the high-capacity bus before it was overtaken by fire.
Eyewitnesses said the driver immediately brought the vehicle to a halt, prompting passengers to scramble out in haste.
They were said to have safely distanced themselves from the bus moments before the blaze intensified and gutted much of it.
Operatives of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to distress calls and battled the flames until they were completely extinguished. Other emergency responders were also on ground to manage the situation.
The charred remains of the bus were later removed from the bridge to prevent prolonged gridlock on the busy corridor.
Authorities were yet to determine the cause of the fire as of the time of filing this report. No injuries or fatalities were recorded.
