A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to ensure that President Bola Tinubu is the only candidate on the ballot for the 2027 general elections.
Momodu made the claim on Thursday during an interview on Arise Television, monitored by newsmen. The former presidential aspirant argued that the APC’s control of 31 state governorships does not intimidate the opposition, insisting that if an election were held today, the ruling party would face defeat.
“The APC is trying to ensure that President Tinubu is the only candidate on the ballot,” Momodu said. “They are manoeuvring behind the scenes, but Nigerians are wiser than them. At the ADC, we are neither worried nor panicking.”
The ADC leader also criticised the conduct of the recent Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, describing the process as overly heavy-handed.
“Just for a single local election in the FCT, they declared a curfew. The FCT Minister personally supervised polling stations across the city, essentially acting as the Inspector-General of Police,” he added.
Momodu’s remarks reflect growing concerns among opposition parties about the perceived consolidation of power by the APC ahead of the next general elections.
