The House of Representatives on Wednesday approved an amendment to the Electoral Act 2026, introducing strict sanctions against individuals who hold membership in more than one political party.
The resolution was adopted during plenary at the green chamber as lawmakers considered changes to the existing electoral law.
With the amendment, belonging to multiple political parties at the same time has now been classified as a criminal offence.
The lawmakers stipulated that any person found culpable of dual party membership would be liable to pay a fine of N10 million.
The provision also includes a custodial punishment for violators.
According to the amendment, offenders could face a maximum prison sentence of two years if convicted.
The development forms part of efforts by the National Assembly to tighten regulations guiding Nigeria’s electoral system.
Lawmakers noted that the measure is expected to strengthen political party discipline and improve the integrity of the democratic process.
