A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, has cautioned leaders of the party against acting as though they are above others amid the ongoing internal crisis, reminding them that no individual holds power permanently.
George stated that political office holders should remember that leadership positions are temporary, stressing that those entrusted with authority must act with humility and responsibility.
His remarks come as the PDP intensifies efforts to resolve lingering disputes within its ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party working to reconcile rival factions and restore unity.
One of the key steps being considered is bringing together the opposing groups within the party so that aspirants seeking elective offices on the party’s platform can contest without the risk of legal battles.
However, reconciliation efforts face a major hurdle as the faction aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reportedly supports a second-term bid for Bola Tinubu, while another camp led by Kabiru Turaki insists that the PDP must present a credible presidential candidate.
The Wike-backed group has reportedly maintained that the party should not field a presidential candidate in the next election, with indications that it may demand that the Turaki-led camp endorse Tinubu as part of any reconciliation arrangement.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News, George appealed to party leaders to prioritise the collective interest of the PDP and the country, noting that political power is temporary.
He said leaders must recognise that democracy is meant to serve the people by ensuring that those elected into office manage the nation’s resources for the benefit of citizens.
George added that no individual driven by selfish interests would retain influence indefinitely, warning that attempts to mislead the public would eventually be exposed.
He further likened leaders to dustbins, saying those in positions of authority must be prepared to face scrutiny and criticism regardless of the offices they occupy.
He also expressed appreciation that some of the party’s founding members are still alive to remind the current leadership of the ideals upon which the PDP was founded.
