Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and immediate past Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has officially withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party and declared his defection to the African Democratic Congress.
Tambuwal attributed his exit from the PDP to the lingering internal disputes, leadership disagreements and widening divisions that have plagued the party in recent times.
The former governor made his decision public in a statement shared via his X handle early Thursday, revealing that he had earlier forwarded a formal letter of resignation to his ward chairman before completing his move to the ADC alongside his political associates and supporters.
He said the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection.
Tambuwal, however, acknowledged the role the PDP had played in shaping his political career, during which he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later governed Sokoto State for two terms.
Despite this, he explained that the persistent crises within the party had made it difficult for him to continue his membership.
According to him, the unresolved conflicts and growing divisions within the PDP have gradually eroded the cohesion and clear direction that once defined the party.
Explaining his choice of the ADC as his new political platform, Tambuwal said he believes the party offers a credible alternative capable of advancing democratic ideals and national development.
He added that Nigeria needs a political platform anchored on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and a strong commitment to the country’s progress.
Tambuwal also reiterated his continued dedication to the principles of democracy, justice and national unity.
His defection comes amid a wave of notable political realignments involving the ADC, including the recent move by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, a development that analysts say could strengthen the party’s opposition profile ahead of future elections.
