Former Super Eagles star, Henry Nwosu, has died at the age of 62, leaving the Nigerian football community in mourning.
The news was confirmed on Saturday by his former teammate, Segun Odegbami who was also part of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad, via his social media platforms.
Odegbami revealed that Nwosu had spent five days in hospital fighting for his life before passing away at around 4:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving intensive care since Wednesday.
He expressed his grief in the post, writing: “It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to share the news of the passing of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest in peace with our Creator in Heaven.”
Nwosu first rose to prominence as the youngest member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad that secured Nigeria’s maiden continental championship on home soil.
Renowned for his creativity, vision, and technical brilliance in midfield, he became one of Nigeria’s celebrated football talents of his generation.
Following his playing career, Nwosu continued to contribute to the game as a coach and mentor, nurturing young talents across the country.
His death marks the end of a remarkable era in Nigerian football, leaving behind a legacy that inspired generations of players and fans alike.
