Police launch investigation into killing of businessman, kidnapped wife

Kebbi State Police Command have opened an investigation into the murder of a 35-year-old businessman and the abduction of his wife in Birnin Kebbi.

The incident reportedly took place early Friday in the Badariya area, where the victim, Sufiyanu Garba, was attacked inside his residence by unidentified gunmen.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Bashir Usman said detectives were immediately sent to the scene. “The victim was taken to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. His body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary,” he confirmed.

Usman added that the State Commissioner of Police has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to handle the case, stressing the urgent need to secure the safe return of the abducted woman and bring the perpetrators to justice. Residents were also urged to report any suspicious activities to the police promptly.

The victim’s wife, Zainab Mohammed Yauri, was reportedly kidnapped during the attack.

Her elder brother, Mohammed Yauri, told Channels Television that the assailants forced their way into the house, shot Garba, and took Zainab to an unknown location.

Garba was later buried on Friday at the Birnin Kebbi main cemetery in accordance with Islamic rites.

The attack adds to growing security concerns in the region, with recent violent incidents in neighbouring states resulting in several deaths and injuries.
