An unidentified driver was on Sunday allegedly shot dead by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo–Iwo highway in Osun State.
The shooting reportedly occurred around 10 a.m. at the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, near a police checkpoint.
Footage obtained from the scene showed the victim’s car riddled with several bullet holes, while residents gathered around the vehicle and called for an investigation into the incident.
Eyewitnesses said the operatives, said to be in plain clothes, had pursued the driver from the Iwo axis before opening fire on the vehicle.
A resident of the community, who simply gave his name as Sunday for safety reasons, told our correspondent that the driver died instantly inside the vehicle after the gunshots.
He added that the incident drew many residents to the scene, with some expressing anger over the killing.
“The man was coming from the Iwo side heading towards Osogbo when some security personnel in mufti started firing at his car. He died immediately behind the steering wheel. The vehicle was riddled with bullets and people quickly rushed to the area.
“The shooting happened close to a police checkpoint, but the men who fired the shots were not in uniform, so it was difficult to immediately identify them,” he said.
Reacting to the incident, the Osun State Police Command confirmed the shooting and disclosed that the suspected gunmen were operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, said two individuals had been taken into custody in connection with the matter.
“The incident did occur, and those alleged to have carried out the shooting are Customs operatives. Two suspects have been arrested in relation to the case. A detailed briefing will be provided shortly,” Ojelabi said.
