Italy’s military has confirmed that a drone attack targeted the Ali Al Salem Air Base on Sunday, a facility hosting forces from Italy and the United States.
According to a statement by Italy’s Chief of the Defence General Staff, Luciano Portolano, the drone struck a shelter that housed a remotely piloted aircraft belonging to the Italian Task Force Air. The aircraft was destroyed in the attack.
Portolano, however, confirmed that all personnel at the base were safe and no injuries were recorded.
The Italian Armed Forces also said the number of personnel at the base had been reduced in recent days due to the evolving security situation in the region. Remaining troops are continuing essential mission activities.
The affected aircraft was described as a key operational asset that had remained deployed at the base to support ongoing missions.
Meanwhile, an Italian military base in Erbil also came under a drone attack last week, although no casualties were reported. Following the incident, Italy temporarily withdrew some of its personnel—fewer than 300 troops—who had been stationed there to train local security forces as part of an international mission.
