Drivers operating on ride-hailing platforms including Uber, Bolt and inDrive have commenced a three-day strike across Lagos State and Ogun State, warning commuters to expect difficulty booking rides during the protest.
The industrial action began on Monday, March 16, and is expected to last until Wednesday, March 18, as drivers demand reduced commission charges and improved working conditions from the ride-hailing companies.
A protesting driver identified as Bashir announced the strike in a video widely shared on TikTok, explaining that many drivers had temporarily withdrawn their services. According to him, passengers could request rides and wait for long periods without any driver accepting the trip.
He stressed that the protest is directed at the companies operating the digital platforms rather than commuters, adding that drivers are demanding lower commission rates and a fairer partnership with the app operators.
The strike, reportedly organised by the Amalgamated Union of App‑Based Transporters of Nigeria, is expected to disrupt transportation across major parts of Lagos and neighbouring communities in Ogun, where many residents depend on app-based transport services for daily movement.
Residents have been advised to plan their journeys earlier, consider alternative transportation such as the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit system, and remain cautious of unofficial drivers who may attempt to charge excessive fares during the disruption.
The protest is expected to continue until March 18 unless negotiations between the drivers and the ride-hailing companies lead to an earlier resolution.
