The Nigerian Air Force has approved a new welfare policy that allows families of personnel who die in the line of duty to continue receiving their salaries for up to 12 months.
The initiative was authorised by the Chief of the Air Staff, Hasan Bala Abubakar, and aims to provide financial support to bereaved families while death benefits and entitlements are being processed.
According to the policy, spouses or next of kin of deceased service members will receive the late personnel’s salary for up to one year from the date of death, or until all official benefits and compensation are fully paid, whichever comes first.
Under normal public service rules in Nigeria, salary payments usually stop immediately after the death of a government employee. The new arrangement is designed to reduce the financial hardship families often face during the administrative process of accessing their entitlements.
A senior official within the air force said the policy forms part of a broader welfare reform programme intended to strengthen support for military personnel and their families, recognising the sacrifices made by those serving in the armed forces.
