The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that at least 26 passengers and crew members sustained injuries following an accident involving the Abuja–Kaduna Train Service on Monday.
In an interim report released by the NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation stated that the train departed Rigasa Station in Kaduna at about 7:15 a.m. and was approaching Asham Station around 9:16 a.m. when the incident occurred.
According to the report, a loud bang was heard after the train’s power car and trailing locomotive collided with one of the passenger coaches along the track between kilometre 50 and 51.
Preliminary findings suggest the accident may have been caused by a fault in one or more couplers linking the train coaches, though investigations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause.
Despite the disruption, the NRC confirmed that railway services on the route resumed later the same day after emergency response teams attended to the injured and cleared the affected section of the track.
