Iran is set to hold a funeral on Wednesday for its top security official, Ali Larijani, following his death in an Israeli airstrike that has further inflamed tensions across the Middle East.
The Islamic Republic fired a series of missiles toward Israel, with two people reported dead near Tel Aviv after one of the strikes hit a commercial area.
In Lebanon, Israeli air raids hit central Beirut, killing several people and drawing the country deeper into the conflict, triggered by rocket attacks from the Iran-backed Hezbollah.
Iranian news agencies confirmed that funeral ceremonies for Larijani and Gholamreza Soleimani, the Basij paramilitary chief also killed, will take place in Tehran at 1030 GMT.
Their deaths were officially announced on Tuesday.
Larijani, a key figure in Iran’s security and defence strategy, is the highest-ranking official killed since February 28, when attacks by Israel and United States also claimed the life of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran’s army chief, Amir Hatami, warned that the country’s response to Larijani’s killing would be “decisive and regrettable,” signalling further military retaliation.
The conflict has already affected global energy markets, with Tehran threatening to disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices remain close to $100 per barrel amid fears of supply shortages.
US President Donald Trump criticised allies for not supporting Washington’s efforts to secure the Strait, but stressed that the US military could act independently.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards vowed continued strikes, describing Larijani’s death as a rallying point for national resistance.
