Suspected bandits have attacked a Nigeria Immigration Service outpost in Balia community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing one officer and carting away two AK-47 rifles loaded with ammunition.
The slain officer, identified as Umar Yusuf, was among personnel manning the facility when the assailants struck on Tuesday morning, riding in on motorcycles and overpowering the security detail stationed at the post.
A source familiar with the incident said that the attack occurred in broad daylight at approximately 10 a.m., with the gunmen launching a coordinated assault that left the outpost overwhelmed before help could arrive.
The source noted that the outpost is strategically located along Babanna Road, close to the Benin Republic border, an axis that has over the years become a flashpoint for banditry and terrorist activity in the region.
“Babanna Road has over the years become notorious for banditry and terrorist attacks,” the source said.
The latest assault is not an isolated incident along the corridor.
In November 2025, gunmen ambushed a convoy belonging to the member representing Agwara/Borgu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, as he travelled to Babanna in Borgu Local Government Area.
The ambush, which occurred around 11 a.m., resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and left an unspecified number of civilians and security operatives injured.
The attack has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation along the Niger State border communities and the vulnerability of security outposts in remote areas to armed group infiltration.
