Tragedy struck Dutse as two children lost their lives in two distinct fire incidents, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed.
According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, the first fire occurred in the early hours of March 17, around 4 a.m., in Layin Dabinai, near Masallacin Malam Babba.
The blaze, whose cause is yet to be determined, reportedly engulfed parts of a home belonging to Aminuddeen Abubakar, a staff member of the Federal University Dutse, where two of his children, aged two and six, were killed despite the efforts of emergency responders.
A second fire broke out on March 19 at approximately noon in the Gida Dubu area.
Preliminary reports indicate the fire started from an electrical spark in the kitchen of resident Nura Garba, also known as Dangwan Gwan. Flames spread to nearby homes owned by Mu’azu Garba and Mohammed Aliyu, popularly called Jaujen Hadejia, damaging parts of their kitchens and roofing. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in this incident as firefighters quickly contained the fire.
The NSCDC said investigations into both fires are ongoing to ascertain the causes and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The command extended its condolences to the bereaved family and called on residents to exercise caution in handling electrical appliances and open flames.
Mahmud stressed that the NSCDC remains committed to safeguarding lives and property throughout Jigawa State.
