Tensions in the Middle East have escalated further following the killing of a senior Iranian military official in a new wave of coordinated strikes.
Ali Mohammad Naini, spokesperson for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, was confirmed dead by state media on Friday, in what authorities described as a targeted attack.
The incident, reportedly linked to joint operations by the United States and Israel, marks another significant blow to Iran’s military leadership amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
Naini’s death came hours after he publicly dismissed claims by former United States President Donald Trump that Iran’s naval capabilities had been weakened.
The late brigadier general had challenged Washington to deploy warships to the Persian Gulf, maintaining that Iran’s military strength remained intact.
Iranian officials condemned the strike, accusing “American-Zionist forces” of carrying out the operation. They also reiterated that the country’s missile production capacity had not been disrupted despite sustained attacks.
The latest development is part of a series of targeted killings involving high-ranking Iranian figures in recent weeks. Reports indicate that other casualties include intelligence chief Esmaeil Khatib, political figure Ali Larijani, and paramilitary commander Gholamreza Soleimani.
The situation has been further complicated by earlier reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in late February—an event that has significantly altered the country’s political and security landscape.
Despite the mounting losses, Iranian authorities have continued to project defiance. President Masoud Pezeshkian has vowed sustained resistance, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has maintained that the government remains stable and operational.
Now in its third week, the conflict has expanded beyond military targets, increasingly affecting critical energy infrastructure across the Gulf region.
A recent strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field triggered retaliatory drone attacks on oil installations in Kuwait, with fires reported at major facilities.
The escalating hostilities have also drawn attention to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route, as fears grow over potential disruptions to oil supply.
Across the region, air defence systems have been activated in countries including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia, with reports of intercepted missiles and debris causing damage in some civilian areas.
The attacks have coincided with major cultural celebrations such as Nowruz and Eid, heightening anxiety among residents.
