Several Nigerian filling stations have increased the pump price of petrol following a fresh price adjustment by the Dangote Refinery, raising concerns among consumers already grappling with rising living costs.
Reports indicate that retail outlets linked to the refinery, including MRS Oil Nigeria Plc, adjusted their prices less than 24 hours after the refinery raised its gantry price by ₦70 to about ₦1,245 per litre.
In parts of Abuja, MRS filling stations increased their pump price from ₦1,267 to about ₦1,367 per litre. Other independent marketers also implemented similar adjustments, with stations operated by Ranoil, Empire Energy, and AA Rano reportedly selling petrol between ₦1,370 and ₦1,440 per litre.
A station manager at an MRS outlet confirmed the increase, explaining that the adjustment was a direct response to the refinery’s new gantry price.
According to him, “MRS filling stations now sell at ₦1,367 per litre, an increase of ₦100 from the previous ₦1,267. The change follows the latest increment in Dangote Refinery’s gantry price.”
The development means that many Nigerians are now purchasing petrol within a price range of ₦1,367 to ₦1,440 per litre across several retail stations. However, outlets operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) are still selling petrol at around ₦1,261 per litre in some locations.
Industry analysts say the increase reflects broader pressures in the global energy market, as crude oil prices recently climbed above $110 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority indicates that the Dangote refinery supplies about 61 percent of Nigeria’s domestic petrol consumption, meaning any adjustment in its pricing structure is likely to have a widespread impact on retail fuel prices.
The latest hike is expected to intensify economic pressure on households and businesses, with transport costs and the prices of goods and services likely to rise in the coming weeks.
