The University of Jos community in Plateau State was thrown into confusion on Friday following the recovery of a baby’s remains from a clogged drainage pipe connected to a female hostel in the Naraguta area of the campus.
The incident reportedly came to light after students raised concerns over a persistent offensive odour and a malfunctioning sewage system, prompting school authorities to invite technicians to investigate the source of the problem.
Sources said the plumbers, while working to clear the obstruction, discovered the remains trapped within the pipe.
A hostel staff member, who requested anonymity, suggested that the infant might have been disposed of through a toilet, possibly after a terminated pregnancy by an unidentified occupant of the hostel.
According to the source, the remains were uncovered when sections of the pipe were dismantled during the repair process, exposing what had been lodged inside the drainage channel.
The discovery triggered shock and anger among residents of the hostel, many of whom described the incident as disturbing and called for urgent action.
Some students urged the university management and security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation to identify those involved and ensure accountability.
As of the time of filing this report, the institution had not issued any official statement on the development, while attempts to get a response from the university’s Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful.
