A political group, the Ekiti North Progressive Youth Alliance (EKNPYA), has warned against any attempt to impose a senatorial candidate on the Ekiti North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the principles of equity, justice, and fair play must guide the political process.
The group also called for the senatorial seat to be ceded to Ikole Local Government Area, arguing that the council has not produced a senator since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999.
The Coordinator of EKNPYA, Tayelolu Ajayi, made the position known in a statement issued on Sunday in Ido Ekiti, the headquarters of the senatorial district.
Ajayi alleged that some politicians were planning to return certain National Assembly members from the state through a consensus arrangement despite what he described as poor performance by some lawmakers.
According to him, such a move would undermine democratic principles and would be strongly resisted by voters in the district.
“Suppression of other aspirants in the name of consensus is a political fraud, which will be wholesomely rejected by voters,” Ajayi said.
He maintained that allowing Ikole Local Government to produce the next senator would promote justice and political balance within the district.
Ajayi also warned against what he described as the recycling of leadership, noting that the continuous return of the same political figures often breeds mediocrity and resentment among constituents.
He further noted that Ikole remains the largest local government area in the district and one of the largest in Ekiti State, yet it has not produced a senator since the return to democracy.
The EKNPYA coordinator therefore urged political stakeholders to prioritise fairness, competence, and inclusive representation as the 2027 elections approach.
Currently, all nine National Assembly seats from Ekiti State are held by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The state’s representation in the Senate includes Opeyemi Bamidele for Ekiti Central, Yemi Adaramodu for Ekiti South, and Cyril Fasuyi for Ekiti North.
Ekiti North Senatorial District comprises five local government areas: Ikole, Oye, Ido/Osi, Moba, and Ilejemeje.
The group concluded that genuine representation would help attract federal projects, promote development, and ensure the effective delivery of democratic dividends to the people of the district.
