A 43-year-old employee of the National Youth Service Corps, Abbas Olalekan, was on Monday brought before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over allegations of conspiracy and attempted procurement of abortion.
Olalekan, who reportedly lives in the Mosafueto area of Oke-Ata in Abeokuta, is being prosecuted on a two-count charge involving conspiracy and an unlawful attempt to terminate a pregnancy through the provision of drugs.
Presenting the case, the prosecuting counsel, Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the alleged offences occurred between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.
He alleged that the defendant collaborated with others still at large to carry out the act.
According to the prosecution, Olalekan was in a relationship with the deceased, a corps member posted to Abeokuta, and allegedly impregnated her.
The prosecutor further stated that the defendant attempted to end the pregnancy by providing abortion-inducing drugs, which were said to have resulted in the woman’s death.
Olu-Balogun added that the alleged offences violate Sections 516 and 230 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
The defendant, however, denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
