The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Monday criticised the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, warning against engaging in political confrontations without the ability to sustain them.
Wike made the remarks during the 107th National Executive Committee meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party held on Monday.
His comments followed claims by Makinde that politicians aligned with a faction of the PDP loyal to Wike were working to support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Makinde had earlier spoken on Sunday during a closed-door meeting with the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, and the senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson, at the Bauchi Government House.
According to Makinde, he had previously attended a meeting with Wike and President Tinubu where the FCT minister allegedly pledged to keep the PDP aligned with the President ahead of the 2027 election.
Responding to the claim at the NEC meeting, Wike dismissed Makinde’s statement as misleading.
He said it was unfortunate for anyone to start a political fight they could not finish, adding that politics should not be treated like contract work.
Wike also made a remark interpreted as a direct jab at Makinde, saying the governor was more interested in financial gains while he himself was focused on political power.
The FCT minister further cautioned party members against unnecessary confrontations, noting that success in politics requires strategy rather than bold statements.
Looking ahead to the party’s national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30, Wike urged members to show commitment to the party’s activities, warning that those who fail to participate should not later claim loyalty to the party.
He concluded by calling for unity within the PDP while urging leaders to pursue reconciliation efforts with sincerity.
