Pentagon plans deployment of 3,000 additional troops to Middle East

The Pentagon is preparing to deploy about 3,000 additional troops to the Middle East as tensions continue to escalate in the conflict involving Iran.

The planned deployment, drawn from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, would reinforce thousands of Marines already being moved to the region to support ongoing military operations.

According to US defence officials, no final decision has been taken regarding the troops entering Iranian territory. However, the move signals a significant escalation in the US-led campaign and raises the likelihood of deeper American involvement.

The 82nd Airborne Division is known for its rapid response capability, with units able to deploy globally within hours, although it remains unclear whether all elements will be mobilised.

The troop buildup comes weeks after the United States launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military assets and infrastructure, including missile systems, naval units and defence facilities.

Officials overseeing the operation under US Central Command said thousands of targets have been hit since the strikes began in late February.

The conflict has also had global economic repercussions, particularly in the energy sector. Iran’s actions affecting access to the Strait of Hormuz through which a significant share of global oil supply passes have contributed to rising fuel prices.

The United States already maintains tens of thousands of troops in the region, and the latest deployment suggests preparations for potential expanded operations, including efforts to secure critical shipping routes.

Meanwhile, public support for the military campaign appears to be declining. A recent opinion poll indicated that a majority of Americans oppose the strikes, reflecting growing concern over the prolonged conflict.

The development comes despite recent remarks by Donald Trump indicating ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran, even as hostilities persist across the region.
