The Ogun State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the alleged assault of an eight-month-old infant at a private school in the state.
It was gathered that the incident took place on Wednesday, March 18, within the school premises where the child’s mother, Gloria Umukoro, is employed.
Narrating the incident, Umukoro said the school had earlier closed for revision week, but she stayed back to complete examination-related tasks.
She explained that the baby, who was wearing a diaper, had initially been with the school principal before being handed back by the school director, Korede Afuye, about 30 minutes later.
According to her, the principal later placed the baby on the floor due to restlessness before stepping into the office, while another colleague also left the scene, leaving her alone with the child.
Umukoro said she first noticed dampness around the baby’s leg and assumed it was urine, but became alarmed shortly after when she picked up the infant and discovered bleeding.
She added that a colleague, who is a nurse, examined the baby and confirmed that the bleeding was from the anus, with bruises observed around the area.
The mother alleged that the school director was the last person to have contact with the child before the injuries were detected.
She said she confronted him for an explanation but could not determine how the injuries occurred within such a brief period.
Umukoro further stated that although the school management appealed to her to remain calm, she insisted on escalating the matter due to the seriousness of the situation.
The incident was subsequently reported to the police.
Confirming the case, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command said it had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further handling.
“The report involving the alleged assault of an eight-month-old baby was received on March 18 and has been forwarded to the SCID, particularly the Gender Unit, for thorough investigation. The identity of the child is being protected,” the police spokesperson said.
The command noted that investigations were ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the case.
