Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to immediately remove Moshood Jimoh as the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Nigeria Police Force Zone 2 Command in Lagos.
Sowore made the demand on Monday, alleging that Jimoh has a troubling record of human rights violations, including the arbitrary arrest and detention of critics and activists during his tenure as Commissioner of Police in Lagos State.
According to the activist, Jimoh’s past conduct raises serious concerns about his suitability to lead the strategic police command, which oversees security operations in both Lagos and Ogun State.
Sowore accused the police officer of suppressing dissent and intimidating citizens, particularly during protests against the demolition of buildings in communities such as Oworonshoki, Ode-Onirin, and Makoko.
He alleged that several residents and protesters were arrested and detained during those demonstrations, while security operatives reportedly used excessive force against affected communities.
The activist also referenced a judgment by the Federal High Court of Nigeria which reportedly ordered the police to pay him ₦30 million in damages after he was declared “wanted” in October 2025.
According to Sowore, the court ruled that the action taken by the police under Jimoh’s leadership at the Lagos command violated his fundamental rights.
He further alleged that the police authorities had yet to comply with the court’s directive to pay the damages.
Sowore therefore urged the police leadership to demonstrate commitment to accountability and respect for human rights by reversing Jimoh’s appointment to the Zone 2 Command.
