Fresh political realignments may be emerging ahead of the 2027 general elections following renewed discussions between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The renewed talks gained attention after Obi paid a Sallah visit to Kwankwaso in Kano last Sunday, sparking speculation about a potential alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
In a post on X, Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator of the Obidient Movement, said the meeting focused on strategies for advancing shared political interests and improving Nigeria’s governance.
The development has revived conversations about a possible partnership between the two political figures, whose separate presidential ambitions in the 2023 elections divided opposition votes.
Before the 2023 election, Obi contested under the Labour Party (Nigeria) with strong support from the youth-driven Obidient Movement, while Kwankwaso ran on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party backed by the Kwankwasiyya political movement, particularly influential in northern Nigeria.
Negotiations between both camps ahead of the 2023 polls reportedly collapsed due to disagreements over power-sharing arrangements and which candidate would lead the ticket. As a result, both men ran separate campaigns while Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress eventually won the election.
Political observers say a united front between the two politicians could reshape opposition politics in the country.
Meanwhile, Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former president, is reportedly leading efforts to bring key opposition figures together ahead of the next election cycle.
According to Sumner Sambo, politics editor at Arise News, a committee set up by Obasanjo in December had begun discussions with stakeholders linked to both Obi and Kwankwaso to explore the possibility of forming a broad political coalition.
Sambo noted that the success of such an alliance would likely depend on the involvement of other major opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi, to build a united political front.
Also speaking, the National Legal Adviser of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Magaji Mato, said many Nigerians have long desired a political alliance between Obi and Kwankwaso.
According to him, both politicians represent a younger generation of leadership and possess the experience and capacity many citizens believe are needed to govern the country effectively.
Tanko also confirmed that discussions between both camps had been ongoing since the aftermath of the 2023 elections, stressing that the goal is to build a broad coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in the next general election.
Political analyst Nduka Odo described the recent meeting as a significant development for opposition politics, noting that a strong alliance could strengthen the opposition and create a more competitive political landscape ahead of 2027.
However, he cautioned that the success of any coalition would depend on the willingness of the political actors involved to resolve differences and work together toward a common goal.
